Important Considerations/Caveats -- Financial Disclosures:
A few very important caveats here are that in the studies included in the two reviews/meta-analyses cited above:
- Stenvers et al. (2014) was supported by Abbott Nutrition with a financial grant and in-kind contribution of Glucerna SR and FreeStyle Navigators.
- In Li et al. (2005), meal replacements were provided by SlimFast Foods Co. Inc. (West Palm Beach, FL).
- In Heymsfield et al (2003), two authors were from Unilever Research and Development and one was from the SlimFast Foods Corporation. The lead author was a member of the Slim-Fast Nutrition Institute, a non profit organisation that reviews and supports nutrition-related investigator-initiated research.
- In Hamdy & Zwiefelhofer (2010), Dr. Zwiefolhofer worked for Nestleฬ HealthCare Nutrition – which manufactured three products mentioned in the article (BOOST Glucose Control, BOOST Nutritional Energy Drink and Optifast Shake) – at the time of publication.

These caveats present a research bias such that the researchers could be tempted to sway their data and statistical use, results, and conclusions to alignย withย the aims of the product suppliers.
